Maya del Sol is one of the first restaurants Kevin and I ate at when we first moved to Oak Park four years ago. Maya del Sol is a Latin-fusion restaurant and the executive chef is from Montego Bay, Jamaica so he incorporates a Caribbean flare in to the dishes.
The restaurant has one of the most beautiful outdoor patios with gorgeous hydrangeas and other flowers everywhere.
The patio has its own bar as well as a fire pit. They also offer fleece blankets for colder nights and have sombreros guests can wear for fun. There is also live music the last Friday of every month.
Each table is served complimentary chips and salsa to start every meal. Both salsas are really good, but I especially love the green salsa. It is so fresh and tangy tasting.
On Friday Kevin’s mom and dad treated us to dinner for my birthday. We shared a couple of appetizers to kick off the night. First, we tried an order of the arepas de tinga which ended up being one of the highlights of the meal for me. The arepa itself was very sweet which paired nicely with the tomato in the tinga sauce.
Polenta + Chicken + Tinga + Pico de Gallo + Queso Fresco
We also ordered the tuna ceviche which had pineapple in it and was so refreshing!
Tuna + Avocado + Sweet Corn + Red Onion + Red Pepper + Pineapple + Cilantro + Yuzu-Rocoto
We’ve been to Maya several different times and have tried a lot of their menu. Usually the staples for me are either fish tacos or vegetarian enchiladas. I decided to go for some different tonight and ordered the calabaza rellena which is a stuffed acorn squash. The dish normally comes with mushrooms but I ordered mine without. It was so delicious! I would definitely order it again.
Acorn Squash + Arborio Rice + Mushrooms + Chayote + Zucchini + Sweet Corn-Butter Sauce
Kevin went with his usual choice of the carne asade, however; he ended up switching meals with his mom because her enchiladas were a little too spicy for her.
Chipotle Marinated Skirt Steak + Chimichurri + Tamale + Kale
Poached Chicken + Chihuahua Cheese + Aji-Amarillo Sauce + Cilantro + Onion + White Rice
Kevin’s dad went with the steak tacos which he really loved as well!
Carne Asada + Cilantro + Onion + Poblano Rojas + Habanero Aioli
Their margaritas are great and you really can’t go wrong with any of their menu items! Apparently their cheeseburger is even a must order item!
Even if you don’t live in Oak Park, I highly recommend hopping on the green line or driving out to dine at Maya del Sol. Especially be sure to come in the summer so you can enjoy their patio!
Maya del Sol is located at 144 S. Oak Park Ave. in Oak Park, IL
