Last year my sister hosted a fabulous dinner for her birthday at The Boarding House. I was so excited when she picked this restaurant for her dinner because it was on my list of places to try.
The Boarding House was created by Alpana Singh who is the former host of one of my favorite Chicago food shows, Check, Please! Alpana Singh is a master sommelier so a lot of the restaurant’s focus is on wine with a wine bar located on the first floor and the dining room on the second level. The wine bar’s ceiling is even made out of wine glasses!
And the dining room’s ceiling is made from wine bottles.
The decor is very fun and eclectic with green and teal frames on the walls.
We had a pretty large group that night so we started the meal with a couple of cheese and charcuterie boards from the bar which were delicious. I even tried pate for the first time and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I forgot to snap a picture so you’ll have to use your imagination.
For my meal, I ended up ordering two things from the appetizer section of the menu. First up I had the burrata with peaches which was fantastic! Cheese + bread = love!
Next, I had the tuna nicoise salad which was also great. I love fresh ahi tuna and this salad was no exception.
Kevin and Hilary both ended up ordering the same thing for their entrees which was the seared halibut. They both loved it and Kevin even said it was one of his favorite fish dishes he has eaten.
The menu changes seasonally so the same items may not always be available. In fact, looking at their menu online right now, there are similar dishes to what we ordered but nothing is the same. I would love to go back and try more of the menu!
The Boarding House is located at 720 N. Wells in Chicago’s River North neighborhood
