Good morning! Have you all recovered from your holiday activities yet? Being off work has really thrown me off on knowing what day of the week it is and I completely missed posting yesterday so I apologize for that. I also came down with a cold a couple of days ago so spent most of yesterday laying around. Other than getting sick, we had a great Christmas and I can’t believe it’s already over! Here is how we spent our Christmas break:
TUESDAY | After our eye doctor’s appointments in the morning, we hit the road that afternoon and headed down to West Lafayette to spend a few days at my parents’ house. This is actually the first year we have ever had Christmas in Indiana. We normally spend Christmas in Louisville at my grandparents’ house so this year was a change for us. We definitely missed seeing all of our extended family, but we still had so much fun at home. Once we got in, we went out for dinner with my mom, dad, and sister to Cafe Literato where I had the best Smoked BBQ Pork and Corn Pizza on gluten free crust.
After dinner we drove around and looked at Christmas lights before heading back to the house. My brother and sister-in-law arrived in town from Alabama later that night.
CHRISTMAS EVE | We woke up and had cinnamon rolls for breakfast while we watched Christmas in Connecticut by the fireplace. Normally black and white movies put me to sleep, but I actually really enjoyed this one!
We had a gingerbread house making contest in the afternoon which turned out to be pretty hilarious. My mom and dad’s house kept collapsing and was pretty much a disaster (sorry dad!) but it was highly entertaining!
My brother came out of left field with his creativity and hand drew icicles, lights, and even made candles in the windows with icing.
My sister and I worked on a house together and thought ours turned our pretty well! We even had Rudolph making snow angels in the front yard.
After gingerbread house making, we all got ready and went to the Christmas Eve service at my parents’ church.
After church we came home and ate dinner. Our tradition is always to have a ham and heavy appetizers for dinner which included spinach dip, cheesy hashbrown casserole, and strawberry jello pretzel salad.
After dinner we each got to open one gift which was our new Christmas pajamas we get every year! We spent the rest of the evening playing board games, eating cookies and drinking eggnog while wearing our new jams!
CHRISTMAS | On Christmas morning we woke up and each opened our stockings before eating Christmas brunch.
Brunch included two different breakfast casseroles, monkey bread, cheesy grits, and bacon. I love brunch and this homemade version was delicious!
After we ate, we headed into the living room and opened presents around the tree. I got a lot of great gifts including some new TOMS booties, a new robe, and a Patagonia fleece.
We spent the afternoon watching Christmas movies before heading out on a scavenger hunt around town that my dad put together for us. My dad has always been really good a planning games and activities and this was no different! We had two teams: me, my mom, and sister-in-law versus Kevin, my sister, and brother. We had ten different clues and had to text a picture of each location to my dad before getting the next clue. It was super fun and not just because my team won! I’m pretty sure whoever had my mom on their team would have won since she knew a couple of locations nobody else did.
We spent the rest of the evening playing more board games including Scattergories and Apples to Apples.
FRIDAY | We woke up and ate more of Christmas brunch. The girls then headed out shopping to get some day after Christmas sales. We hit up Target, Kirkland’s, and Hobby Lobby and each came home with tons of Christmas decorations for super cheap! I can’t wait to put out all of my new finds next year! Soon after we got home, Kevin and I packed up our car and headed back home to Chicago. We were sad to leave because it was such a great trip!
SATURDAY | We headed out to the suburbs to spend the day with Kevin’s parents celebrating Christmas with them. We arrived early afternoon and ate some snacks while falling asleep to watching It’s A Wonderful Life. Kevin’s mom made a beef tenderloin for dinner which was great. After dinner we grabbed Starbucks and drove around looking at Christmas lights. We found an awesome house with tons of lights on acres of land! We came back and exchanged gifts and ate chocolate pie for dessert. Unfortunately, I took zero pictures that day so you’ll have to use your imagination.
SUNDAY | We went to one of Kevin’s cousin’s house for a get together with Kevin’s mom’s extended family. We watched the Bears game and ate more food (I need a holiday detox). It was fun seeing everyone, but again I forgot to take pictures. Kevin and I came home and watched Four Christmases later that evening.
That was our Christmas in a nutshell! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday as well!
