Good morning! How was your weekend? I am writing this post in my pajamas from my couch this morning because it’s a SNOW DAY!! Yesterday Chicago had more than a foot of snow dumped on it so the school I work for closed today. Luckily for us we got the call around 5:30 yesterday so we knew early last night. I might have done a little celebratory dance when I found out. 😉 In addition to the extra day off today, I had a fun weekend! Here is what I was up to:
FRIDAY | Kevin and I met for dinner at our new favorite Mexican restaurant, Axcan. We ordered their guacamole of the day which had mango and jicama in it and was delicious!
Afterwards we came home and watched the series finale of Parenthood. I have mixed feelings on how the show ended. I loved Sarah’s wedding, that Crosby kept the Luncheonette, that Joel and Julia stayed together, and that Adam became headmaster at Chambers. I didn’t like how/when Zeek died or that they showed everyone in the future. I wish they had just ended it on the baseball scene celebrating Zeek’s life. I just want to remember the Bravermans as we know them today. It didn’t add any benefit for me knowing their future lives. Thoughts?
SATURDAY | Saturday morning I went to my women’s Bible study and then met some girls from my Tuesday night small group for brunch at Trenchermen. I had one of my favorite brunch dishes to date! I ordered the Eggs ‘Florentine’ which is poached eggs with a tomato hollandaise served over kale on top of crispy grits. It also came with a side of brussels sprouts that were fantastic!
After brunch I headed over to Gaslight Bar for my friend Mandy’s annual “hooded sweatshirt” birthday party. At her birthday party each year, people are encouraged to wear hooded sweatshirts to be comfortable which is awesome. This week is Mandy’s 30th birthday and her whole family came down to surprise her in addition to all of her friends so there was a big group of people there to celebrate her.
Later that evening Kevin and I stopped in Stella Barra for dinner. This is one of our favorite pizza places and we wanted to try their gluten free pizza. We ordered a sausage pizza which was really good! The gluten free crust is very thin and crispy compared to their normal crust which has the perfect chew. The best part of the meal is their amazing cookie bar. We got a couple of gluten free chocolate chip cookies to go.
SUNDAY | Like I said earlier, Chicago got a ton of snow this weekend. It started overnight on Saturday so we opted to have “house church” yesterday. Our church live streams their services online so we watched from home.
Another reason we watched the service from home is we were supposed to go to a brunch that morning which ended up getting cancelled due to the weather. We needed groceries for the week so decided to venture out early and go to the store. The roads weren’t too bad yet so we were fine.
While we were out we decided to stop in Madison Park Kitchen for some coffee and breakfast. They have gluten free waffles on their menu which is exactly what I ordered.
We watched the Super Bowl later that evening. What a terrible for the Seahawks to lose at the end. How about the commercials this year? I teared up at multiple ones. Of course the Budweiser #bestbuds one was my favorite again this year. I also loved the McDonald’s commercial and all of the ones about being good dads. Lots of feel good messages this year! Since we just had a party for two this year, I didn’t make too many snacks. We had chips with queso and salsa, veggies and dip, and BBQ meatballs.
Did you watch the game? What kind of food did you make?
