Beatrix is one of Lettuce Entertain You‘s newest ventures located in the Aloft Hotel in Chicago’s River North neighborhood. It is described as neighborhood restaurant, coffeehouse, and meeting place that was recently named by Chicago Magazine as one of Chicago’s Best New Restaurants for 2014.
Kevin and I first dined here for Sunday brunch a few weeks ago and returned this past weekend with his parents for Easter. Beatrix has an open air concept with an exposed kitchen. There is also a coffee and pastry bar you can stop by if you don’t have time to dine in. They showcase both Intelligentsia and Metropolis coffees – two Chicago roasters.
They specialize in their fresh squeezed juices and you can even order mimosas with juices other than traditional orange. Kevin’s mom had a mango, pineapple, orange mimosa and loved it! I had their power greens juice which was fantastic! Makes me want to invest in a juicer at home.
Kale + Romaine + Celery + Pineapple + Mint
Per usual, Kevin ordered the Bloody Mary which was garnished with the traditional celery stalk.
For food on our first visit, I went pretty basic with the egg white omelet which came with an avocado and tomato salsa, whole grain toast, and a side of organic turkey bacon. It was good overall, but the omelet itself was very plain.
Kevin ordered the spicy chicken tinga which came with a sunny side egg, avocado, and corn tortillas – kind of like a breakfast taco. He also had a side of crispy hashbrowns.
For our Easter brunch, we started out with the potato salad deviled eggs that were recommended to us by our waitress. These were incredibly good and I would love to try and recreate them!
This time around, I was feeling more lunch food than breakfast so I ordered the 3-grain and arugula salad with chicken. The salad was light, refreshing, and filling! The chewiness of the grains combined with the peppery arugula made for one delicious salad! I would definitely order this again.
Freekeh + Millet + Red Quinoa + Fennel + Blueberries + Grano Padano + House Vinaigerette
Our first time at Beatrix, Kevin was between the chicken tinga and the steak and eggs so this time he went with the steak chimichurri and eggs. I tasted a bite and the steak was cooked to perfection and had fantastic flavor!
Steak + Chimichurri + Grilled Shishito Peppers + Sunny Side Eggs + Hashbrowns
Kevin’s mom ordered lemon pancakes which were probably the best pancakes I have ever eaten. I am usually more of a waffle girl, but these pancakes were absolutely delicious! They are served with blackberries and a lemon syrup. If you are a sweets person for breakfast, definitely try these!
Kevin’s dad stuck with the traditional breakfast of eggs your way, hashbrowns, bacon, and toast.
One other thing I will mention about their brunch is they offer a make your own chilaquilles bar. Chilaquilles are basically breakfast nachos and they offer an all you can eat buffet where you can pile your plate high with tortilla chips, eggs, salsas, sour cream, cheese, etc. We haven’t tried this, but it was definitely popular among other diners.
Beatrix is one of our new favorite brunch spots in the city. They also serve lunch and dinner which we plan on trying at some point. Apparently they also have a killer caramel pie which our waitress tried to sell us on and then realized they had just sold the last piece – bummer! Another reason to go back!
