This past weekend Kevin and I visited The Promontory for Sunday brunch. The Promontory is a music venue in Hyde Park with a restaurant attached. The name is an ode to Promontory Point located on Lake Michigan on the south side of Chicago. Their menu is “hearth to table” which is made up of contemporary American food highlighting historic dishes cooked in a wood-fired oven. The dinner menu is made up of small plates as well as entrees.
Like I said we dined in for brunch which is a new addition to their menu as of last month. They serve La Colombe coffee which is my favorite so naturally I ordered a cup from their coffee bar to start my meal.
Kevin went with the classic Bloody Mary which he said was good but very simple and didn’t stand out.
For my meal I ordered the Eggs Sardou which is a classic Louisiana dish that is poached eggs over braised artichoke and creamed spinach served on top of mulitgrain toast and topped with creole hollandaise. This was served with a side of cheese grits that were outstanding! My dish was hearty and full of flavor and I loved every bite!
Kevin opted for the grilled skirt steak which was topped with a red wine poached egg and served over a red flannel hash (potatoes and beets) and a roasted pepper puree. He thought the individual components lacked flavor on their own, but everything put together made for a good bite! The red wine poached egg was an interesting twist on the dish as well.
We also ordered a side of their house potatoes because why not? I don’t know what kind of sauce was on these potatoes but they were outstanding! We could not stop eating these.
I will make mention that there is a fried chicken sandwich on their menu that looks and sounds phenomenal! It is topped with bacon, romaine, pickled zucchini, and housemade buttermilk ranch.
Overall I love the concept of The Promontory. It was nice visiting a neighborhood I don’t normally go to. My meal was great and I would definitely go back. Kevin wasn’t overly excited about his meal, but we both would love to try out their dinner menu. I do recommend making the journey to Hyde Park to try out this new hot spot.
The Promontory is located at 5311 S. Lake Park Avenue West in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood
