Well hello there! Sorry for the long radio silence around here. It was really nice to unplug last week while on vacation, but I’m happy to be back. I have so much to share from our trip so I am going to break it down in a few posts. Today is all about the start of our trip in Charleston, SC.
We were up before the sun for our flight on Friday morning so once we got to the airport we stopped in the United Club for a little pre-flight breakfast.
Once we arrived in Charleston we checked in to our hotel and then headed out for the day. Our first stop was for breakfast #2 at Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit.
The restaurant itself does not have much seating so we grabbed our food to go and ate in Marion Square. Kevin and I split a biscuit and pimento cheese grits – a successful first Southern meal!
We spent the rest of the morning on King Street popping in and out of different stores before meeting up with our friends Mandy and Sean for lunch at Poogan’s Porch.
It was my goal to eat as much pimento cheese that day as possible so I ordered the Pimento Cheese Grilled Cheese which was really good!
In addition to the yummy Southern fare, the highlight of my visit to Poogan’s was the couple I met who had THREE french bulldogs with them! I was in frenchie heaven! ๐
Kevin, Mandy, Sean, and I spent the rest of the day walking around and exploring Charleston. We spent a good part of our day on King Street doing some more shopping. We also walked through the City Market looking at all of the vendors’ merchandise.
After visiting the City Market we headed to Waterfront Park which is one of my favorite spots we visited.
The tree lined sidewalks were beautiful and I would love to own one of the water facing condos on the park.
We were pretty hot and sweaty at this point so we stopped in Southend Brewery for a drink break so these three could try some local beers.
We walked down “Rainbow Row” and fell in love with all of the colorful row homes.
I loved all of the beautiful flowers in the window boxes!
We continued our walk down to Battery Park while getting a few history lessons along the way.
We continued exploring and picking out our favorite houses along the way. One of my favorite buildings that we saw was the Charleston Library Society.
I loved the Spanish moss covered trees against the crisp white building.
Later that evening Kevin and I had dinner at Husk. When we first decided we were going to Charleston, the first thing I did was make a reservation at Husk and I am so glad I did.
We had a wonderful meal from appetizer to dessert. Everything was delicious! One of the highlights for us were the Fire Roasted Oysters with Hot Sauce and Honey – so good!
We were pretty tired after our 3 AM wake up call and walking around in the heat all day so we called it an early night after dinner.
The next morning Kevin and I had brunch at Hominy Grill. This was another restaurant I knew we had to visit while in Charleston.
There was about a 30 minute wait but it was well worth it! I ordered a traditional breakfast of eggs and sausage with a side of cheddar grits and a biscuit – yum! Kevin ordered the Smothered Eggs which were served on cornbread and topped with a tasso ham and yellow tomato gravy. Holy cow was this good!
Shortly after brunch we hit the road and started our journey to Hilton Head Island for the week. I’m really glad we decided to add an extra day to our vacation and visit Charleston. The city reminded me a little bit of Savannah, New Orleans, and Key West. I loved the charm of the beautiful homes and the food was incredible!
Stay tuned later this week for a full vacation recap of our time in Hilton Head.
Linking up with Biana.
