If you’ve been following along with my weekend recaps for the past couple of months, you know there is a new Mexican restaurant that we have been frequenting lately. Axcan Mexican Grill opened in Forest Park at the beginning of December and has already made a name for itself among locals.
Complimentary chips and two different kinds of salsas are served to each table. Both salsas have a strong lime flavor which I love with the red one having a slight smoky flavor.
In addition to the chips and salsa, Axcan also has a guacamole of the day. Most recently we tried their guacamole with mango and jicama which was delicious! I loved the addition of fresh fruit in the guacamole.
The dinner menu has a huge selection of traditional Mexican dishes like carne asada, chile rellenos, and tostadas. They also have a large taco selection where you can pick any three for $9. Kevin has tried several different tacos including the al pastor (pork), carne asada (steak), and pollo (chicken).
We’ve also tried some of their speciality tacos like the camaron enmielado (honey chipotle shrimp) and pork belly. While all of the tacos are good, our favorite has definitely been the al pastor which is topped with grilled pineapple.
My absolute favorite dish that I keep going back for are the enchiladas suizas which are stuffed with roasted vegetables and grilled onions and topped with a creamy tomatillo sauce. These are hands down the best enchiladas I have ever eaten.
Axcan is easily our new go to spot for Mexican food. The executive chef spent many years working with Chef Rick Bayless at Frontera Grill so it’s no surprise that the food here is so good. Next time you’re in the mood for some Mexican cuisine, be sure to check out Axcan.
Axcan is located at 7404 W. Madison St. in Forest Park, IL
OMG- my mouth is watering. I LOVE Mexican food- this place looks heavenly.
Mexican food is our favorite and we love that this new place is a 5 minute walk from our house!
